Geopiano

Aggregato, a small art and design gallery in Imola, invited me to make a project for the first exhibition "Raccoglimento a fattor comune". I decided to re-design the geopiano a famous pedagogical toy, invented in 1950 by Caleb Gattegno, an english mathematics and pedagogic. Usually the geopiano is made of plastic or wood with metal nails on the surface and it's used in elementary school to teach geometry in an innovative way. I think this tool has more possibilities of use, it's not just a mathematical tool it's a creative exercise that involves children and adults. First of all I decided to use beech wood mostly because I like weight, colour and endurance of this wood and I've found some cheap unsold stock. Instead of using metal nails I used knurled plugs because they are more versatile and they can be assembled in different ways. Finally the project was completed with rubber bands, now it can be played, put on a table or on a wall.
